Amvets Post #5: Artist Talk with Xavier Tavera at the Minnesota History Center

Hosted by Brian Horrigan, AB'72, Minnesota History Center curator of WW1 and 1968

The Artist Talk is hosted by Brian Horrigan, AB’72, curator of WW1 America, Minnesota's Greatest Generation, and The 1968 Exhibit, currently on show at the History Center. After Xavier's talk, enjoy a self-guided viewing of AMVETS Post #5, The 1968 Exhibit, and other Minnesota History Center collections.

Xavier Tavera’s large-scale portraits of Mexican and Mexican-American veterans set masterful stages for layered and complex stories. The exhibit conveys the reactions, sense of humor, pride, and amusement of men returning from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to live in St. Paul’s West Side, where they had to start their own AMVETS post because established veterans' clubs in town did not allow them membership. AMVETS Post #5  is on view at the Minnesota History Center until April 22, 2018.

Born in Mexico City, Xavier Tavera has lived in the Twin Cities since 1996. His work has been exhibited internationally at curated shows including Lonarte 11 in Madeira, Portugal, No Human Being is Illegal at the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles, Pingyao International Photography Festival in Pingyao, China, and El Otro Americano at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura, Valparaiso, Chile. His portraits are part of the permanent collections of the Weisman Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Plains Art Museum, and MNHS. He received a McKnight Photography Fellowship in 2003 and several artist residencies, including the Casa Poli Art Residency in Concepción, Chile, the BAR Art Residency in Berlin, Germany, and the Maciel Art Residency in Montevideo, Uruguay. Mr. Tavera holds an MFA from the University of Minnesota and teaches photography at U of M's College of Liberal Arts.
